“History is interconnected with the present. How we look at history will determine our perspective of the present. We have to embrace our history, no matter good or bad, to understand our present.“
– Lau Kek Huat, Taiwanese filmmaker and FreedomFilmFest2020 Festival Juror

Editions of Past Festivals

The Freedom Film Festival started in 2003 with a mission to create a platform for independent filmmakers and activists to showcase their films and advocate social causes to Malaysian audiences. We also set out to unearth a new generation of film and documentary makers who were engaging with the real human and social issues of their times.

The Freedom Film Festival has also grown over the years to become an occasion to celebrate talented local, regional and international filmmakers and to talk about films in an open, intimate and interactive atmosphere.

You can view all the previous editions of our festival here.
