Selection Criteria

  • Strong and compelling protagonists.
  • Creative story-led narrative treatment.
  • Stories that have a human rights and social justice perspective.
  • The film will be used to support an impact campaign.
  • Positive and empowering stories of ordinary people.
  • Stories about women and indigenous community are encouraged.

Format & Production

  • 20 minutes in duration.
  • Creative nonfiction, documentary.
  • Film must be completed and premiered at FreedomFilmFest tentatively in July 2024.

Grant details

  • RM10,000 – RM15,000 per film / Up to 3 grants available for Malaysian residents.
  • SGD5,000 per film / 1 grant available for Singaporeans.
  • Equipment & production support.
  • Mentoring from international filmmaking professionals.

Films that are selected for screenings will also be further shortlisted for awards in the following categories:

Each award winner will receive the Justin Louis Award, hand crafted by the Indigenous Mah Meri tribe of Pulau Carey, Selangor.

Considerations for fee waivers will be given to community filmmakers, activists and self-funded films.

Terms & conditions

  1. You have full rights or have written permission from the owner of the film to enter it to FreedomFilmFest 2024.
  2. You give permission to FreedomFilmFest to screen the submitted film for multiple festival screenings (virtual or physical) and also for the promotion of the festival.
  3. You hereby acknowledge and agree that all information provided is correct and true.
  4. Your submission will be automatically disqualified if the information provided is not accurate.
