IDFA Pitch

Pitch your social and environmental justice film project at FreedomFilmFest 2018 and win a grant to participate in the IDFA Academy and IDFA 2018.


Submit documentary projects (series, one-offs and cross-platform) with social themes about Malaysia. Projects can be at any stage from early production to near completion and filmmakers should commit to submit their film to IDFA 2019.

Successful applicants will:

  1. participate in the IDFA workshop on the 1st of October, 2018
  2. pitch their stories on the 4th of October, 2018

The IDFA workshop and pitching session will be mentored by award winning filmmakers, Huang Hui-Chen and Joakim Demmer.


Huang Hui-Chen is an activist and documentary filmmaker. Her films feature intimate profiles of the less fortunate and the exploited and is used for social change.

Hui-Chen’s personal and thought-provoking documentary film, SMALL TALK garnered international attention by winning the Teddy Award for Best Documentary at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival.

Joakim Demmer is an independent journalist and filmmaker, based in Berlin and with an international work field. Joakim has been producing numerous reportages and documentaries mainly with political and social issues.

Demmer’s most recent work, DEAD DONKEYS FEAR NO HYENAS on land investments and disputable development aid in Ethiopia, has been screened in over 35 countries and received several prizes.
