"What Lies Beneath"

The FreedomFilmFest 2016 theme “What Lies Beneath” cast the spotlight on underrepresented human rights and public interest issues through the powerful medium of film. It is a call for everyone to dig deeper into the many urgent issues that individuals, groups, society and humanity are facing today.

FFF 2016 screened a total of 30 documentaries and short films. The festival programme included four masterclasses, a SEA Video for Change network meeting and the introduction of FreedomTalks, a series of panel discussion and events related to some of the themes carried in some of the films.

Two film grants were given out:

  • Ashleigh Lim – Stories of my Father / Kisah AyahKu
  • Nova Goh – Unlocking Bengoh

Award Winners for FFF2016 are:

  • Best International Feature: “A Syrian Love Story” by Sean McAllister
  • Special mention – “Among the Believers” by Hemal Trivedi & Mohammed Ali Naqvi
  • Best SEA Feature: “Emak Dari Jambi” by Anggun Pradesha & Ricky M. Fajar
  • Best Short Film: ” Unsilent Potato” by Sein Lyan Tun
